Project description
At the TATA Steel site in IJmuiden, a coil preparation station is used at Nawals 21. Here, coils are prepared for rolling. An operator manually positions the coil for processing. In this process, the coil was occasionally misplaced and fell from its stand, resulting in damage and downtime.
Tebulo was approached by TATA Steel to design and install a camera measuring system. This standalone system uses photo analysis to determine the center of the rollers with an accuracy of 1 mm, ensuring they are positioned correctly.
In the figures above, a laser line is projected onto an object. This line is filtered from the image using software. Afterward, a conversion takes place, and the 3D coordinates of the line are known. These coordinates are used to calculate the center of the object. This results in a decimal value indicating how many millimeters the center is from the correct position.
This method is also used for positioning steel coils at the Nawals 21 preparation station. Currently, it's just a control tool, but in the near future, it's planned to be integrated into a fully automated feed system for the Nawals 21 preparation station.
